Former cricketers oppose Mickey Arthur's appointment as part-time coach

 ISLAMABAD: Former cricket players, notably Shahid Afridi, believe that such an arrangement may not work in the long run because former Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur is expected to return to the cricket setup as a part-time coach, The News reported on Wednesday.

Coaching is a full-time profession, according to a former Test cricketer who is also in negotiations with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a position.

"Even consulting requires a full-time commitment since consultants must maintain their concentration. The team members would find themselves in awkward positions if they tried to wear two hats at once. The concept cannot be implemented in the long run "He stated, asking to remain anonymous.

The cricketer added that the Pakistani side needed a full-time head coach who travels with them whenever they play abroad and remains with them throughout training camps at home.

"He should spend the entire year with the chosen members of the national team, whether he is a foreigner or a native."

Afridi, who was chosen to serve as the interim head selector, disagreed with the notion as well. "Within Pakistan, there are better coaches to choose from. One of the local coaches must be hired by the PCB, he insisted.

Former pacer Aaqib Javed spoke against the notion, saying, "Coaching is a full-time profession. Arthur to be appointed as team director

As team director, Arthur, who guided Pakistan to its first-ever ICC Champions Trophy victory in 2017, would oversee all operations.

However, in accordance with the anticipated deal, the former Pakistani coach won't be accessible to the national team throughout the English county season.

Arthur will travel with the team to Australia and to the ODI World Cup in 2023.
